The Northeast: The Northeast is Brazil's poorest region where plenty of colonial heritages are still to be found. This area still preserves most clearly the African influence. Its area comprises 18 % of the territoryand consists of the states of Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Pernambuco, Paraiba, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Piauí and Maranhão. Climatically these states are further divided into the coastal area "Zona da Mata" and the "Sertão”- the dry inner area.

The Midwest: in earlier times this area was called Mato Grosso – dense forest. It covers about 22% of the Brazilian territory and includes the states of Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and the Federal District of Brasília.

The South: the South of Brazil is strongly influenced by European immigration. Here are located the wealthy states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

Due to its huge extension, the Federal Republic of Brazil is divided into 26 federal states and 3 time zones and even 4, if you add the archipelago of Fernando de Noronha. Two large river systems determine the country's supply of fresh water: the Amazon and the Rio Paraná.

The capital Brasília is located onthe “Planalto Central” (the central plateau),approx. 1.200 m above sea level and in the middle of an evergreen area, dominatedby open tree savannas (Campos Cerrados). It was built from scratchby 50.000 workers in a record time of four years.
