  • History and Origin

The history of the Mangalarga Marchador begins early in the 19th century, when the Portuguese king Dom Joao VI, fled in 1807 from Napoleon with his entire court and many fine Alter-horses to settle in Brazil; his son, the Prince Regent Dom Pedro I provided his friend, Baron of Alfenas, in 1812 a stallion of the Portuguese Alter-race. This stallion with the name Sublime has been crossed in the south of Minas Gerais with native mares that were descendants of Portuguese and Berber land-breeds. The term "Mangalarga" goes back to the plantation of the same name in the state of Rio de Janeiro, meaning in Portuguese also "wide/spacious paddock”.

At that time the horse was the most important instrument for transportation and travelling. Especially the animals of the ranch Mangalarga aroused the highest attention and lively interest due to their beauty and endurance, but above all because of their very smooth gait.

So, it happened that when horses were brought to the south of Minas Gerais, Mangalarga Marchadors were requested. Only in 1949 the Brazilian Breeders Association was founded, which today serves more than 380.000 registered horses. By numbers, the breed Mangalarga Marchador is the third largest horse race in the world.
